again traditionally we don't call it haleem. it's called "khichra". and traditionally is welfare food, not really supposed to be that exotic. khichra is basically all leftover food mashed up from the days before and served up when theres nothing else left to eat, like porridge for example. not really sure why haleem has been so exoticized in todays age. in our khichra, though most people will deny it, we don't use any daal either. it's more grayish and less liquidy than most peoples versions of haleem. this yellow colouring should not be. in any jamaat khana you would not find this dish.

abbas: You are right, it was called "Khichra". Thanks for your explaination, I couldn't do justice with mine.

zahra: I'll ask around, there might be a copyrights issue if I post the recipes online. I'll have to check first - nobody likes getting sued :)

Hi faraz,

Would you pls give me the name of the Recipe book. So that I can check at amazon if its available, I have been dying to get some good Bohri cook books but no one seems to know of any.

I checked and the cookbook is still under development. It is a masters-level management project of a guy named Adnan (sorry I can't remember his last name) who lives in San Francisco. Unfortunately I don't know Adnan on first hand basis, and my contact is on vacation outside of US at the moment.

Hi there,
I just found this comment blog so I apologize if someone else has already responded to the request for a Bohri Cookbook. There is one that is already published and available to order. It is titled Dhaal Chaawal Palidu and the author is Shamime Ladka. I have a copy and have used many of the recipes from it. It has been invaluable for me because I never really learned how to cook so it has helped with proportions of spices. It also has almost all of the dishes that are common among Bohri cooking and even has some East African recipes. I ordered the book from the UK. It costs about $18.00.

Thanks,
Tasneem
